You are allowed to exist alone in public btw. You’re allowed to go to the movies alone and go out to eat alone and hang out in a park alone and go for a walk alone and whatever else. It isn’t weird or creepy, it doesn’t make you lonely or a loser or whatever. You are allowed to just exist as yourself.

As I get older I’m starting to let go of the guilty urge to build permanent habits. Like, a while ago I decided I would start jumping rope every day. I did it for like three weeks and felt good about it. Then I got bored, because of course I did, because I’m a human person. So now I do a bit of kickboxing because that’s what I like now. The other week I cut all sugar from my diet, just for a week, to challenge myself. Now I’m back to eating sweets but I don’t crave them as much.
Growth is about stretching, trying new things, and setting small, realistic goals for yourself, not picking a “good habit” you’ve decided you will be doing always and forever from now on. That’s not discipline. That’s pointless self-torture and unhealthy resistance to change.
What’s good for you today will not necessarily be what’s good for you tomorrow.

Sometimes the only thing worth looking forward to is a hearty soup and a warm loaf of bread, but it sure is worth it.

If someone tells you they are disabled, don’t disagree. Don’t argue. It’s not up to you, nor is their admission tragic or shameful in any way.
Believe them, support them, and respect them.

What if instead of being so hard on yourself you tried being gentle instead?

As a 30+ year old human, who has Gone Through Some Things, I’m telling you: romanticize your life. Live in the moment as much as you can, watch that sunrise, drink that fancy wine with your take out, take silly photos on your commute, do whatever you can to make yourself smile as much as possible, because you’ll grow older and you’ll regret not putting more value on small, silly things. Happiness isn’t something you achieve one day if you do x amount of things; happiness is made up of moments, fleeting and ephemeral, but that build up something lasting. Romanticize your life.

You’re most powerful when you honor your own rhythm. If your circadian rhythm is nocturnal, don’t follow those “waking up at 4 am changed my life” routines because they’re not for you. If you function best when you focus on a single task, single job, single goal, then working half a dozen sidehustles may not be for you. Honor your own rhythm, work with it instead of against it, and you will achieve so much more than if you blindly follow what’s considered “correct” by social conventions of the time.

People who like rocks see cool rocks everywhere. People who like birds see interesting birds everywhere. The tree on your yard could be an exceptional specimen. The world around you could be amazing and magical, but you aren’t enough of a nerd to see it.
I gave my mum Alexandra Horowitz’s On Looking: Eleven Walks Through Expert Eyes for her birthday this year, it’s a book that revolves around this idea: the author invites 11 specialists in different things to walk around a boring city block with her one after the other so they can point out to her the things they see, that she doesn’t notice. There’s an expert in typography talking about what the variety of fonts on urban signs can tell you about the city’s history, an entomologist pointing out all the urban insects no one pays attention to, a geologist, a sound engineer…
See this is what I mean by “there are more wonders in this world than you can ever dream of and all you need to do is listen to its stories and see it’s magic. ”
I remembered this book existed a couple of months ago and couldn’t remember the name of it! I am very happy now and off to my library’s website to place a hold.
