The list of war crimes Israel perpetrates against Palestine just keeps growing.

The 17 year siege of Gaza is the longest siege in history. The Gaza Strip is home to some 2 million people (or it was before this started). The Strip is surrounded by razor wire and “no go” buffer zones where any Palestinian getting too close would be summarily shot. Nor could Gazans leave this open air prison by the heavily patrolled sea, where the Israeli naval service would use any means possible to prevent this.

There were two exits available, one totally controlled by the Israeli military, the other by the Jordan military. The exit to Jordan has been shut down. About one-third of the 1.4 million registered Palestine refugees live in the 58 UNRWA-recognised refugee camps in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. Egypt does not want more.

Duriing those 17 years, Israel has strictly controlled everything that goes into and comes out of Gaza. Electricity, water, fuel, medical help. They carefully keep Gazans on a subsistence diet. Humanitarian aid coming by sea (including the Canadian Boat To Gaza) have been stopped and sent back. Covid Vaccinations were given to Israelis, not Gazans.

Gazans have no human rights under Israeli military rule. Half of the Palestinian residents Gaza are children.

Each year approximately 500-700 Palestinian children (12-17) are detained and prosecuted in the Israeli military court system, most commonly charged with throwing stones.

This 16 year siege has been marked by various uprisings from among the captives. But apparently this siege has not been brutal enough.

So now, in response to the recent Hamas terrorist attacks on Israelis, Israel is “imposing a complete siege on Gaza.”

After mercilessly bombarding the civilians of the Gaza strip with bombs, Israel is ordering the captive Palestinians to leave…except when they do, they are attacked and often killed.

“There will be no electricity, no food, no water, no fuel, everything will be closed.” When you lock up millions of people in a densely occupied open air prison without food and water, there is only one possible outcome.

This isn’t a war, its an occupation. Its shooting fish in a barrel.

But Israel thinks these flagrant human rights violations are justified, because their leadership don’t see Palestinians as human beings, but as human animals.

Black History Month coupled with the Internet can fill a lot of holes in the history books my generation grew up with. Those of us seeking ways to occupy our time during the pandemic are wise to use this time to educate ourselves.

Some of this Atlantic City history was reflected over the course of the Boardwalk Empire tv series, which depicted a mirror image of black and white criminal worlds.

Decades after the Supreme Court of Canada confirmed the inherent right of Indigenous people to hunt and fish, both for sustenance and a #ModerateLivelihood, the Canadian Government has yet to work with the First Nations Peoples signatory to the Peace and Friendship Treaties to establish a reasonable definition of what that means.

Chief Michael Sack said,

“We’ll define our own moderate livelihood. We’re not here to have anybody decide anything for us. We’ll decide as a Mi'kmaq nation and and move forward that way.”

Which is why the Sipekne'katik First Nation decided to establish its own fishery infrastructure, launched exactly 21 years after the SCC’s Marshall decision. Donald Marshall Jr.’s son Randy Sack received the first of the seven moderate livelihood licenses (50 tags each) issued by the Sipekne'katik Fishery to the Indian Brook band on September 17th. To date a total of 10 licenses, each allows the licensee to use a maximum of 50 traps. That is a total of 500 traps. Contrast that with the 900,000 traps used by the Commercial Fisheries.

The reaction by Commercial Fishers has been violent, and Indigenous fishers have faced threats and intimidation, been shot at with flare guns, had their gear stolen or vandalized, trucks and boats destroyed, and since a Lobster Pound that dealt with Commercial and Indigenous fishers was targeted, vandalized and destroyed, others are refusing to do business with them. Today Chief Sack got a Court Injunction to help protect his people and their Moderate Livelihood Fishery.

“Charles: I think a lot of people don’t fully understand what the Indigenous communities’ rights are. They don’t fully understand that the First Nations have rights that are different from the privileges to fish that non-Natives have.” — Hakai Magazine: Mi’kmaw Fishery Dispute Is Not About Conservation, Scientists Say

This past year we all watched the media portray a white land owner well within his right, to shoot & kill a young Aboriginal youth, for reasons the white landowner was protecting his land from a trespasser.

It’s ironic, that today the media plays out another portrayal; Aboriginal land owners, protecting ancestral, traditional land being forcibly removed by heavily armed military and tactical units.  The same whites who thought it was ok that the white farmer was well within his right to kill for his land, want the government to forcibly remove, and even kill Aboriginals for protecting their land.

The war on drugs is rooted in racist policies . The failure of the war and drugs is obvious. We need to find a better solution, because people of color should never be the victims of racist policies. White Americans are more likely than black Americans to have used most kinds of illegal drugs, including cocaine and LSD. Yet blacks are far more likely to go to prison for marijuana, which is not a hard drug. Moreover , even when white people get caught , they get less time in prison.

…is that Rachael Leigh Cook, the same actress who did the original anti-drug ad when she was a teenager?

It is indeed.

She grew up, realized she’d been exploited to further a racist government agenda, and turned around to bite the hand that feeds. Awesome.

It is so frustrating that Canada’s supposed legalization of cannabis is such a sham.

Powerful Nike commercial featuring athletes who are exclusively Muslim women.

Islamaphobia is the stupid word the MSM chose to apply to fear of and discrimination & racism against Muslims.  Like any form of bigotry and racism, the misconceptions are based on ignorance.   Although there are many Muslims in Canada, like any immigrant population, they are concentrated in spots here and there.  A great many Canadians have not even seen a real live Muslim Canadian much less had a conversation with one.   Apparently this makes fear an easy sell.

Here in Canada, apparently, we have dogwhistle politics, where politicians ride waves of fear to prominance.  MP Kellie Leitch is seeking leadership of the Conservative Party based on “Canadian Values” that bear no relation to the values embraced by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

The faulty justification for Islamaphobia is the belief that Islam represses women.  The reality is that this is no more true of Islam than it is of Judaism or Christianity.

Seriously, is a woman willing to stand up to the Government of Canada because she doesn’t believe it has the right to require her to dress as it sees fit in need of protection?

When Canada adopts Proportional Representation we will be well on the way to eliminating the polarization and dog whistle politics that come from our medieval First Past the Post voting system.
