I’m being inducted into the Canadian SF/F hall of fame

mostlysignssomeportents:

I just got an email asking if I could be free on August 15 for Canvention, the annual Canadian national science fiction convention, because I am being inducted into the  Canadian Science Fiction and Fantasy Association’s Hall of Fame.

Needless to say, my answer was a VERY ENTHUSIASTIC YES.

CSFFA administers Canada’s Aurora Awards and the Hall of Fame, a juried prize that I am UNBELIEVABLY STONKED to be receiving.

This year’s Canvention is

a) Online

and

b) Free

So if you have a hankering to see me in a deeply ferklempt state trying to express my gratitude, you can certainly do so on the 15th!

The list of previous inductees is pretty fantastic, and includes five of my most important mentors:

  • Judith Merrill
  • Lorna Toolis
  • Phyllis Gottleib
  • William Gibson
  • Spider Robinson

As well as many writers who were extraordinarily kind to me over the years, like Charles de Lint and Elizabeth Vonarburg and Tanya Huff.

It is stellar company to be in - joining some of my lifelong heroes. I could not be happier about this.

Congratulations on your impending induction into the Canadian SF/F Hall of Fame, Mr Doctorow!

The Internet is not a luxury.

In 2017 it is a necessity of life.

We find jobs on the Internet.

We do business on the Internet.

We get our news, connect with our families and friends, and we learn things on the Internet.

Net Neutrality isn’t just about companies.

It’s about people.

One of the many things I use the Internet for is to share videos I make. This was from a video I was recording of Cory Doctorow’s talk at the University of Waterloo on December 4th, 2017.

Canadians (and folk anywhere in the world) can sign this petition.

Americans need to call their congress people, which is REALLY easy to do here

Cory Doctorow in Waterloo

On Monday, December 4th, 2017, Cory Doctorow gave his “Dead canary in the coalmine: We just lost the web in the war on general purpose computing” talk at the University of Waterloo’s Cheriton School of Computer Science

The “Dead Canary” references the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) in a long running controversy about incorporating DRM (Digital Restrictions Management) within the Web Standard.  When the W3C chose to ignore the substantial objections both from within the W3C community & its partners, open internet advocates and the public, and refuse a compromise that would have at least made the situation livable, Doctorow wrote the EFF’s open W3C resignation letter.

The W3C continued on its sudden abandonment of support for the open web that it might pander to the powerful media companies calling the tune.  This talk is one way in which Doctorow continues to educate and advocate for better.

The EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation) has been fighting for user rights since before I used the Internet.  https://www.eff.org/

Thread on Net Neutrality from Cory Doctorow. The internet was built with public money. It should be treated as a public utility. Instead greedy telcos like Comcast give us crappy service, fail to maintain the net, and demand more money for profit.
