Surveillance libraries in common smartphone apps have amassed dossiers on the minute-to-minute movements of 200 million+ Americans

mostlysignssomeportents:

An investigation by the New York Times into the shadowy world of
location-data brokerages found a whole menagerie of companies from IBM,
Foursquare and the Weather Channel to obscure players like Groundtruth,
Fysical and Safegraph, who pay app vendors to include their tracking
code in common apps.

These apps sometimes disclose that they will track your location for ad
personalization or to “improve service,” but they don’t generally reveal
that they are beaconing your location to ad brokers you’ve never heard
of, sometimes as often as once a minute, and that this data can be
easily traced back to individuals (say, by looking for phones that go
from your home address to your job five days a week), and that it is
sometimes retained indefinitely.

The Times found evidence of children, public officials, and people with
sensitive addiction, health, and employment situations being tracked in
fine detail by these ad brokers.

For their part, the brokers say that this is merely service being traded
for data, and blame users for not realizing that all this secretive,
creepy shit is happening all the time.

In an accompanying guide
to reducing location tracking, the Times suggests going through
app-by-app location permissions but also points out that this kind of
data marketplace is essentially unregulated.

80% Of Oil Sector Emissions Will Be Exempt From Feds’ Carbon Pricing: Report

80% Of Oil Sector Emissions Will Be Exempt From Feds’ Carbon Pricing: Report:

awkward-teabag:

allthecanadianpolitics:

Let me get this straight.

This is Justin Trudeau’s Climate Change Plan:

1.) Approve 2 giant oil pipelines, and then BUY one of those pipelines once market conditions fail.

2.) Institute a Carbon Tax then Exempt 80% of the oil sector from having to pay anything and exempt Coal Producers as well.

The oil and gas sector is the largest producer of greenhouse gasses in Canada, and Trudeau just gave them a free pass.

These are not the actions of someone who actually cares about climate change.

Above freezing temperatures and rain this week.  In December.  In Canada.

Sounds like spring.

Or Global Warming.

Wouldn’t it be awesome to have a government  clever enough to engage in #ClimateAction?  Instead, ours showered more than a billion dollars–
Canadian tax dollars, by the way– on Fossil Fuel Companies.

Not the workers.

The lions share of Canada’s revenue comes from Income tax.  I think its been over half a century since Canada’s corporate tax income was about even with personal income tax.  And, of course, truly rich Canadians are more likely to hide their wealth  than pay tax on it.  And the biggest richest corporations are more likely to suck subsidies out of our government than actually pay in.

It’s never the ordinary people who get enormous gifts from the government; it’s the ordinary people who pay the tax they owe.

So now Mr Trudeau’s Government has succeeded in angering:

Albertan fossil fuel workers, who would rather get a new pipeline.

The Fossil Fuel Companies, who would rather get a new pipeline.

Fossil Fuel Company investors, who would rather get a new pipeline.

And all the Canadians who understand Climate Change is an existential threat.

This after kicking all the strategic voters who voted for real electoral reform.

Its starting to look more and more like Mr Trudeau is going to be a 1 term PM.
