La petite fille et son chat” would originally have been black and white, filmed in the month of may in the year 1900, at the Koehler home in the Monplaisir district of the city of Lyon, in France. The handcranked original would have been recorded to be played back at 18 frames per second. But now the digital version has been restored, colorized, overlaid with a sound track and rendered at 60fps.

The little girl was 4 year old Madeleine Koehler. The cat looks much like my Main Coon nephew cat, Simba.

Although little Madeleine is probably excited to be showing off her hat, and is clearly enjoying herself at the start, it was obviously staged for the camera. When the cat tries to leave, he’s returned to the frame, most likely by the parent who wasn’t the one cranking the silent film camera.

When the cat gets impatient, he begins to arm wrestle the little girl for not keeping the treats coming fast enough, and suddenly she’s not having fun anymore. She looks pleadingly into the camera, no doubt silently appealing to her stage parent, but then she goes on. The abrupt finish suggests it didn’t end happily.

Its incredible to see film from so long ago. Today’s children are photographed and videoed from a very young age, and it is lovely. But it is always important not to lose sight of their limits. Turn the camera off if they’re not having fun. And remember they are entitled to their privacy, too.

Its Bisan from Gaza, I’m Still Alive After Six Months of Bombing

This brave young woman is a citizen journalist who has been covering her trials and Tribulations of surviving in the Gaza Strip, and sharing them with the world.

Since Israel doesn’t want the world to continue watching what it is doing in Gaza, it seems killing the remaining Palestinian Press isn’t enough anymore. Israel expelled Al Jazeera, the media platform on through which Bisan reached the world, as well as the Associated Press.
I hope very much hope Bisan and everyone else in Gaza can survive in the dark.
